Our Story
Mid-Pacific Tours was founded by Samantha and Cliff, a marine scientist and a longtime Kona local who shared a frustration with how most ocean tours were being run on the Big Island: oversized boats, overcrowded snorkel sites, and guides who were more focused on schedules than on the animals and ecosystems guests came to see. They set out to build something different — a company where every trip stays small, every guide is genuinely knowledgeable, and every guest leaves with more than just photos, but real understanding of what they saw. Today, Samantha and Cliff still personally guide many of our tours, bringing hands-on marine science expertise and years of local ocean knowledge to every group.
What We Believe
We believe the best ocean experiences happen in small groups. Capping every tour at 6 guests isn't a marketing angle for us — it's the foundation of how we operate, because it's the only way to give guests real access to the water, real time with our guides, and a genuinely calmer, more respectful interaction with marine life. We believe expertise matters: our guides don't just point out animals, they explain behavior, ecology, and context, turning every trip into something closer to a guided education than a standard tour. And we believe in doing right by the ocean — from how closely we approach wildlife to how we manage our boat traffic at sensitive sites like Kealakekua Bay, our practices are built around observation and respect, not disruption.
